With the year on its last legs, it is important to reflect on the past 12 months to evaluate where the IID is in relation with its goal of becoming the professional institute that all of its member, National Council and National Office are striving to attain. It is with an enormous sense of pride that I am happy to announce that we are making substantial strides towards achieving that objective. It is in fact so evident that that future looks extremely brilliant for both members and management of the IID. With so many momentous events it is difficult to pick a few to feature in this highlight package, and so here is a handful of our proudest and finest moments.

We unveiled the IID Nemeth Trend Report in February 2011 at the World of Marble and Granite (WOMAG) showrooms in Rivonia. The IID Nemeth Trend Report, the first of its kind to be released in South Africa, is a new and exciting collaboration between Dave Nemeth and the IID and will function as a reference for all decorators, designers and retailers in the industry. The IID Nemeth Trend Report is a world class account and forecast of the latest global trends to enthuse the interior design industry and how they can be adapted to the South African landscape. With the support and sponsorship of PG Bison and Decorex SA these workshops went on a national road show stirring the creative juices of all our members.

Decorex SA set the platform throughout the year allowing for all the IID Regional offices to communicate with the public and express the possibility of design and spread the inspiration of our industries creativity. The Sealy Beautiful and Basic Boudoirs debut at this year’s Decorex Johannesburg is one example that showcased an exquisite collection of bedroom-settings by six style-shaping decorators merging the hottest trends in fabrics, textures and patterns. The IID and Bedroom Basics with flooring sponsored by Belgotex Floorcoverings set the stage for these inspirational concept stands setting a new benchmark for interior design with ideas that could be translated freely in the visitor's own decorating style.

Grand Designs Live in association with BBC and Freeworld Coatings set the captivating scene for the second innovative life-size IID House presenting the talents and products of our professional, corporate and founding members. The spectacular home was erected in the interiors area of the show at the Coca Cola Dome in May 2011.The IID set five of our designers; Phil Darby, Liezel Malan, Tracey-Lee Lynch, Mark Reilly and Adian Bennett the task of designing a room that encapsulated their passion and creativity.

The IID finally laid out our welcome mat at 109 Greenway, Greenside. We would like to extend our thanks to all our members who have sponsored product and services to ensure that we maintain the highest standard and that that our offices and work environment reflect the values and objectives of the industry and the Institute.

The IID blog was created to communicate with the industry and provide our members with a platform to raise your thoughts surrounding topics and issues that are currently affecting the interior design industry both locally and internationally as well as your company. The IID launched its Facebook and Twitter campaign in June of this year. Social networking and communication is fast preceding any other form of communication. Soon the IID’s social networking accounts will be updated constantly and we will be able to actively interact with our industry 27/7.

Educational institutes form a big party of the IID membership base and are a vital resource for our industry. The students of the industry are the future and as the institute we have a responsibility to nurture and support the talent that will one day lead. It was with this spirit that we have launched the much anticipated student category in June of 2011.The student category applies to students of Architecture, Interior Design and Interior Architecture with a minimum of two years of study successfully completed. The category also applies to students of Interior Decorating who are completing a one-year full time course.

With all that have been brewing in the last twelve months it is no wonder that we at the office need to take some time to breathe and build up our energy reserves for a 2012 that promises to be even more exciting, loaded with more member’s benefits and filled with buckets full of ground-shifting ambitions. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our members and our National Council a blessed and peaceful festive season. Take care and we look forward to renewing our relationship in January of 2012.
